    Fast Desynchronization For Decentralized Multichannel Medium Access Control

    Distributed desynchronization algorithms are key to wireless sensor networks as they allow for medium access control in a decentralized manner. In this paper, we view desynchronization primitives as iterative methods that solve optimization problems. In particular, by formalizing a well established desynchronization algorithm as a gradient descent method, we establish novel upper bounds on the number of iterations required to reach convergence. Moreover, by using Nesterov's accelerated gradient method, we propose a novel desynchronization primitive that provides for faster convergence to the steady state. Importantly, we propose a novel algorithm that leads to decentralized time-synchronous multichannel TDMA coordination by formulating this task as an optimization problem. Our simulations and experiments on a densely-connected IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor network demonstrate that our scheme provides for faster convergence to the steady state, robustness to hidden nodes, higher network throughput and comparable power dissipation with respect to the recently standardized IEEE 802.15.4e-2012 time-synchronized channel hopping (TSCH) scheme.Comment: to appear in IEEE Transactions on Communication

    How well is current plant trait composition predicted by modern and historical forest spatial configuration?

    There is increasing evidence to suggest that a delayed response of many forest species to habitat loss and fragmentation leads to the development of extinction debts and immigration credits in affected forest habitat. These time lags result in plant communities which are not well predicted by present day landscape structure, reducing the accuracy of biodiversity assessments and predictions for future change. Here, species richness data and mean values for five life history characteristics within deciduous broadleaved forest habitat across Great Britain were used to quantify the degree to which aspects of present day forest plant composition are best explained by modern or historical forest patch area. Ancient forest specialist richness, mean rarity and mean seed terminal velocity were not well predicted by modern patch area, implying the existence of a degree of lag in British forest patches. Mean seedbank persistence values were more closely related to modern patch area than historical, particularly in larger patches. The variation in response for different mean trait values suggests that species respond to landscape change at different rates depending upon their combinations of different trait states. Current forest understorey communities are therefore likely to consist of a mixture of declining species whose extinction debt is still to be paid, and faster colonising immigrant species. These results indicate that without management action, rare and threatened species of plant are likely to be lost in the future as a result of changes in forest spatial configuration that have already taken place. The lag seen here for rare specialist plants suggests however that there may still be scope to protect such species before they are lost from forest patches

    An excited-state approach within full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo.

    We present a new approach to calculate excited states with the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method. The approach uses a Gram-Schmidt procedure, instantaneously applied to the stochastically evolving distributions of walkers, to orthogonalize higher energy states against lower energy ones. It can thus be used to study several of the lowest-energy states of a system within the same symmetry. This additional step is particularly simple and computationally inexpensive, requiring only a small change to the underlying FCIQMC algorithm. No trial wave functions or partitioning of the space is needed. The approach should allow excited states to be studied for systems similar to those accessible to the ground-state method due to a comparable computational cost.     Virtual reality:a tool for investigating camouflage

    Disruptive camouflage utilises high-contrast patches, typically positioned at the margins of an object to impede the detection and/or recognition of a perceiver. To date, the predominant methods for examining camouflage strategies are computer-based (i.e., detection experiments), field-based (e.g., survival analyses) and camouflage choice experiments using dynamically coloured organisms (e.g., cephalopods). Recent advances in virtual reality (VR) technology present the opportunity to create novel environments for testing camouflage theory. VR can combine the control of lab-based research with the ecological validity of field-based studies. Here, we develop an experimental paradigm that enables camouflage testing within a virtual reality environment. The environment comprised a spherical target that can be wrapped with different camouflage patterns and a domed background, upon which a natural image can be projected. Participants were positioned within the centre of the dome and were tasked with finding and shooting at targets randomly positioned across a bounded range within the environment. We manipulated the luminance contrast (0–2 steps of 2.5 L *) of disruptive and edge-enhancement (EE) components of the camouflage patterning to examine their impact on participant response time. Having high, but not extreme, contrast resulted in increased camouflage effectiveness. The EE component had no effect independently but interacted with the DC component. Specifically, when using EE alongside DC, a lower contrast EE component is more effective than a higher contrast EE component. Our results demonstrate that VR is a viable research tool for testing camouflage theory

    Semi-stochastic full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo: Developments and application.

    We expand upon the recent semi-stochastic adaptation to full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC). We present an alternate method for generating the deterministic space without a priori knowledge of the wave function and present stochastic efficiencies for a variety of both molecular and lattice systems. The algorithmic details of an efficient semi-stochastic implementation are presented, with particular consideration given to the effect that the adaptation has on parallel performance in FCIQMC. We further demonstrate the benefit for calculation of reduced density matrices in FCIQMC through replica sampling, where the semi-stochastic adaptation seems to have even larger efficiency gains. We then combine these ideas to produce explicitly correlated corrected FCIQMC energies for the beryllium dimer, for which stochastic errors on the order of wavenumber accuracy are achievable.N.S.B. gratefully acknowledges Trinity College, Cambridge for funding.     Quality of life in restorative versus non-restorative resections for rectal cancer:systematic review

    BACKGROUND: Low rectal cancers could be treated using restorative (anterior resection, AR) or non-restorative procedures with an end/permanent stoma (Hartmann’s, HE; or abdominoperineal excision, APE). Although the surgical choice is determined by tumour and patient factors, quality of life (QoL) will also influence the patient's future beyond cancer. This systematic review of the literature compared postoperative QoL between the restorative and non-restorative techniques using validated measurement tools. METHODS: The review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020131492). Embase and MEDLINE, along with grey literature and trials websites, were searched comprehensively for papers published since 2012. Inclusion criteria were original research in an adult population with rectal cancer that reported QoL using a validated tool, including the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-CR30, QLQ-CR29, and QLQ-CR38. Studies were included if they compared AR with APE (or HE), independent of study design. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool. Outcomes of interest were: QoL, pain, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (stool frequency, flatulence, diarrhoea and constipation), and body image. RESULTS: Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria with a total of 6453 patients; all papers were observational and just four included preoperative evaluations. There was no identifiable difference in global QoL and pain between the two surgical techniques. Reported results regarding GI symptoms and body image documented similar findings. The ROBINS-I tool highlighted a significant risk of bias across the studies. CONCLUSION: Currently, it is not possible to draw a firm conclusion on postoperative QoL, pain, GI symptoms, and body image following restorative or non-restorative surgery. The included studies were generally of poor quality, lacked preoperative evaluations, and showed considerable bias in the data
